| THE STROOD WOMEN’S INSTITUTE is based on Mersea
Island, and is a lovely Evening WI with about 95 members. Our
monthly meetings are held at the British Legion Hall, Barfield Road,
West Mersea at 7.30pm, normally on the 4th Wednesday of the month.
However, in August we have a ‘Guest’ Evening when Husbands and
Friends may come along, and in December our Christmas Party takes
place; both of these normally take place in different venues. As well as our monthly meetings, we have the following “Clubs” which are friendly meetings/get togethers, and provide a good opportunity to get to know other members:- Cinema Club (During the winter months). Showings of popular films are held in member’s homes (refreshments served). Gardening Club (During the summer months). Some members invite others to have a look around their gardens, over a morning coffee or an afternoon cup of tea. Luncheon Club Most months, lunches are organised for members, and take place at a local pub or restaurant. Monday Club Members meet on the Monday evening following the monthly WI meeting, in the home of one of our members. We may have a craft demonstration, or perhaps a short talk on an interesting topic. Walking Club These are generally held every month. Walks are of differing lengths to suit the preferences of the members participating. Other events include:- Coach trips to various places of interest Outings, where some members drive and liaise and offer lifts in their cars to other members. Strawberry teas and coffee mornings held in member’s homes and Gardens. For those who are good at arts and crafts or cake-making, there’s the annual “County Show” organised by the federation of Essex WI’s. There’s also an annual get-together meeting with some other local WIs (the Roman River Group), which includes entertainment and light refreshments. We welcome visitors along to our meetings, but we do ask them to make a donation of £2.50. |
